OC Meetup Reminder, Apple Pay Success, and New Chime Card Promo for Old Navy

Happy Friday evening everyone, hopefully your weekend is off to a great start.  For those of you in the Orange County, LA, or San Diego area, please join me tomorrow afternoon for burgers, fries, and top secret manufactured spending discussions at In-N-Out (after all, that’s what a hamburger is all about).  I will be outside on the tables wearing my Travel with Grant shirt, you can’t miss me!

  • When: 12PM – 2PM on Saturday, October 25
  • Where: In-N-Out at the Tustin District: 2895 Park Ave, The District, Tustin, CA 92782 (map)
  • Why: Talk miles and points with me and other locals (possibly share some secrets too)

No need to RSVP, just show up and join the conversation.

A few days ago, I talked about Apple Pay and how to setup Apple Pay on your iPhone 6/Plus (link).  This afternoon, I had my first opportunity to try out Apple Pay.  I was at Panera and it was very simple.  When you are finished ordering at the counter, and when you would normally swipe your card on the POS terminal, I held my iPhone near the corner of the POS system and my iPhone sudden lit up with my Citi Card on the screen.  After holding my thumb on the home button for 2 seconds, my iPhone sent a signal to the POS system, and the receipt printed.  Very cool!  The transaction (digital receipt) immediately showed up on my iPhone.

If I made multiple purchases over the last few days, I would be able to see them listed on the transaction screen.  To view more details, I clicked the open (Citi App) link at the top of the screen.

After logging into the Citi App, I was able to see more information about the transaction.

Inside the Settings App, I noticed a new section called Passbook & Apple Pay (requires iOS 8.1 and an iPhone 6/Plus).

Clicking that option opened up more details about Apple Pay.  I could view all the credit cards I have stored with Apple Pay and select the default card for payment.  I also set up my default billing & shipping addresses, contact number, and email.

You can chose which credit card you want to default to when you pay with Apple Pay.  You can still change the cards when you are ready to pay.  It is that simple.  Apparently there is some problem with card art for some of the cards, since the credit card image is not correct on 2 of my cards (maybe it is just a Citi thing).

Lastly, I received an email from Chime Card this afternoon about their new promo with Old Navy.  From now through Sunday October 26, you can get $6 cash back on a $30+ purchase at Old Navy.  If you bought a $30 Old Navy gift card, you would essentially be getting a 20% rebate on your purchase.  Since Chime Card added fees to PayPal Business Debit Card reloads, I haven’t used Chime Card much.  You can learn more about Chime Card here.

As a refresher, here are all their current cash back deals (pretty good deals if you plan on shopping at these retailers or restaurants).

I will probably do another meetup on Saturday November 15 in the evening. If you are available, it would be great to meet you. I will have more details in a few weeks.

So… can I name the credit cards that I add? Obviously for those who play this game, its helpful to discriminate between two potentially “identical” cards, one of which might be an Authorized User on the wife’s account and one of which might be your own card, only one of whom you might currently be trying to meet minimum spend on at the moment, etc. Or simply “Citi AA Exec #1, Citi AA Exec #2, Citi AA Exec #3, …”.

As of today, you cannot name the cards you add to Apple Pay. All you see is the card art and the last 4 digits (5 for AMEX) of the credit card. Therefore, you will not be able to identify the cards unless you know the last 4 or 5 digits of the card. I imagine that the naming feature will be coming out soon. (I hope!)
