Will be taking the wife OUT of Crown Heights (loud partying here) to a nice little Hilton in Long Island, where I will be using a $200 coupon that we got from seeing their timeshare in Vegas.

    Have a good one all!

        1. Grant

Glad you enjoyed your stay. Hopefully your view was nicer than mine (too of the parking structure). I did like the pull down screen for the projector. ESPN never looked so good.

  2. lovemytechy

Labor day is very special to us as it is our engagement anniversary.. Thanks to your awesome posts the extra $$ has allowed for some more fun and luxury to bring out the love in our lives.
This will be a fun labor day in a free one night hotel stand in NYC (low price guarantee) and checking out some restaurants around there and save 5% on my amex blue cash.

  3. Jonathan

Mileage run on American! IAD-DFW-LAX-BWI. Spend night in Baltimore and then Sunday morning BWI-DFW-SFO-DCA!

Hope you have a good Labor Day weekend!

    1. Grant

That is very patriotic of you to fly all around the country. Hope you enjoy all your flights. I hope you have lounge access so you can grab some free food and snacks between flights.

  4. Arsenal

Traveling in China right now and will be in Shanghai over the weekend. Stay in Hyatt and will be back in U.S. after the long weekend!

  5. Art

Flying to Boston to take kid to BU & visiting another kid at UNH. Staying at 3 different Holiday Inns on points & flying on Southwest with points & companion pass. Money saved using points goes towards books/tuition.

    1. Grant

Sounds fun, is your son your SWA Companion? Are you getting a lot of use out of the Companion Pass? Do you have the Chase IHG credit card for IHG Platinum status?

      1. Art

Not son but daughter & yes she listed as SWA Companion. Yes, I have gotten good use of it. Don’t have Chase IHG CC, IHG did a status match early in 2013 from another hotel program, Le Club Accor Hotels.

        1. Grant

Glad you are getting your money’s worth for the SWA companion pass. I’m sure she enjoys of the bonding time. It’s the opposite in my family. I have the SWA companion pass and picked my mom as my companion. Nice work on the status match.

          1. GAM

Pretty sweet of you to take your mom for a ride.

I flew my mom out with me to Rome in March on a BA Companion Ticket in First Class (which I got after spending $30k on a BA Visa, closed now).

She was totally starstruck by the whole experience (“wait, the beer is free?!”).

          2. Grant

I helped my parents book business class tickets to Spain for next March. They have never flown in business/first class internationally. I know they will love it!

  6. Dave

    Hey Grant,
Just clicked through your amazon link. Good timing as I was planning to buy a few things anyways.

Starting tomorrow I will be planning out a trip to see my parents in Maine. I haven’t been home in several years so I’m looking to seeing my parents and the fall foliage if the trip happens. The rest of this weekend will be spent with good friends enjoying the sun and catching up. They are visiting from Japan, so I’m looking forward to all their stories!

On Another note, are you still able to load serve cards at Walmart express machines?

    1. Grant

Thank you for using my Amazon link, I really appreciate it. Do you mean the Walmart Money Center Kiosks? I believe so, since I haven’t heard anything about them. There are no Kiosks near me, I just go to the Money Center.

Maine sounds wonderful this time of year. The only time I’ve ever been to Maine is when my US Airways flight from AMS to PHL was running low on fuel and had to stop in Bangor, Maine for a refill. The airport looked nice from what I could see from my window :)

  7. Nick

I’ll be spending time with my wife and her friend’s in Japan this weekend. If the weather clears, we hope to see Mt. Fuji from Tokyo Sky Tree. We both used AA miles to fly here, and plan to take “advantage” of the no foreign transaction fees on my Citi Executive AA while we are here. Thanks for your great blog and give away!

    1. Grant

Sounds awesome, I’ve never been to Asia, but I would live to visit Japan. Glad your Citi AA Executive card made the trip with you :)

  8. Dan P

I still have about 3 weeks left on my Citizens Bank Cashback card, which gives me 10% back on restaurants. My wife and I are heading down from Boston to Rhode Island for the weekend and are going to hit up a bunch of restaurants, all paid for with the cash back I’ve already earned. Plus, we get to stay for free at her mom’s house near Providence (travel hack!)

  9. Daniel

I’ll be driving to a national park tomorrow for a weekend of camping. It’s 3+ hours each way, so I’ll be sure to use my Chase Freedom card to fill up for gas.

    1. Grant

Which National Park will you be going to? I’ve only been to a few parks in the West Coast. Hopefully you get good gas mileage so you don’t need too many fill ups.

  10. Kris

I just broke my toe two days ago so my new weekend plans now involve my Kindle, a bottle of wine, a comfy chair, and an ice pack. Not what I was planning on doing for the long weekend but life happens. Good thing I love reading!

    1. Grant

I’m sorry to hear about your toe. I think I messed up my pinky toe playing soccer a few years ago. Glad you will be hanging out with your Kindle and a Wine Bottle. Now that’s a party!

  11. Lauren S.

I’m a miles/points/credit rewards newbie ~ just got my first CC with giant reward points attached to it for spending $5000 in 3 months, so …… I will not be traveling anywhere this holiday weekend. Instead, I’ll continue reading this blog & others & scouring the internet for great deals & ways to manufacturer spending on my new CC so that next year at this time I can spend this holiday weekend somewhere other than on my laptop.

    1. Grant

Good morning Lauren, that sounds like a good plan to me, which credit card did you get? Let me know if you have any questions about manufactured spending. Have a great weekend!

  12. Michael D

Using the sign up bonus from the sapphire preffered card to get 2 RT tickets from Denver to Sioux Falls SD for a celebration of life event honoring my favorite aunt who would have been 96 this week.

    1. Grant

That is very touching, I hope you enjoy spending time with your family and relatives this weekend. I’m glad the CSP made it happen.

  13. HanksTravel

You’re heading to Portland, OR to fill on brews, I’m going to Portland, ME to feast on lobsters. I’ll be staying at the Holiday Inn Portland-by the bay for 35k points a night from recent IHG card sign up. Current nightly rate is $360.05 a night. Life is good!

    1. Grant

Beers vs lobsters! I have a feeling I will be able to drink more beers than you will be able to eat lobsters. Do you accept my challenge? Great deal on IHG. They will treat you nicely with IHG Platinum status from your Chase IHG credit card. Have fun!

  14. Eric

We’re going to outer space. Sort of. We will eat astronaut ice cream. I’m taking my wife and 8-week old daughter to Houston to visit NASA, the Museum of Natural History, and to pig out on BBQ and Tex Mex. Friday night we’re using the free anniversary night from the Chase Hyatt CC to stay at Hyatt Market Street and Sat/Sun we’re staying at the St. Regis Houston where I got a discounted rate and used SNAs to upgrade to a nice suite. Thanks for your blog!

    1. Grant

That sounds like an awesome weekend. Great use of the free anniversary night! BBQ sounds excellent. Go for the pulled pork sandwich with spicy BBQ sauce :)

  15. Marlon

I’ll be traveling to San Diego from Chicago on Southwest with my girlfriend. Of course using the SW companion pass that I got in February.
Also, my serve offer was get $25 back after making 5 purchases of $10 or more. I’ll be using your amazon link to buy 5 $10 amazon GCs and essentially get 50% off!

    1. Grant

Enjoy San Diego, it should be very nice this weekend. I’m leaving SoCal and flying to Portland (I need a small break from the heat). Will you be staying in downtown SD at any of the hotels? Nice deal on the Serve promo, I always seem to get the lowest offer :/

  16. Angie

Can’t believe this is the last weekend of summer! Where did time go? I have my niece’s 100 day Red Egg and Ginger banquet to attend (a milestone in Asian culture) and I’ll be sure to use my sapphire to pay! I also have two BBQ’s this weekend in Upstate NY so I’m planning to burn some of those BBQ calories while shopping at Woodbury afterwards =) Have a fab Labor Day weekend Grant!

    1. Grant

Thank you Angie! I just googled red egg and ginger ceremony. Very interesting Chinese tradition. The number of red eggs represents the gender and the 100 days ceremony represents living to 100 years old. Enjoy the BBQ, I’m a big fan of pulled pork sandwiches, yummy :)

  17. Trevor

Saying goodbye to my daughter as she heads back to college 800 miles away. On the upside, I’ll be visiting her in 6 weeks and she’ll be coming home on breaks for free — thanks to points and bonuses! :)

I didn’t receive the Serve offer via email but wonder if I’ll still get it. Does it show up in the Offers part of your Serve account (hidden here: https://secure.serve.com/Profile/Offers)? I don’t have any offers there myself.

    1. Grant

That’s nice that your daughter will be coming back home to visit. Which college does she attend? As for the Serve offer, I think it is very similar to the direct deposit offer from last month. Even though some people didn’t receive the email or letter in the mail, they still received the bonus after completing the requirements. You can even call Serve and ask them about the offer.

      1. Trevor

Mt Holyoke in Mass. Thanks for the info about the offer. The direct deposit offer worked for me and I didn’t receive an email or letter for that.

  18. Marc

Going to Houston for the LSU vs Wisconsin football game. I can use my amex sync to get $5 off 3 different places in Houston, 1 day before the deal expires!

  19. Craig

I’m going shopping for a new suit and other things I’ve been putting off for a while. On the plus side, I just got my United MileagePlus Explorer card so can start putting some spend on that.

  20. Judy Jones

Working every day, washing off the dirt from the construction of Going to the Sun road in Glacier National park from all our rental cars.

  21. Susan G

Spending the weekend with friends, swimming and eating. Also preparing for 3 weeks in Asia, booked biz class to Hong Kong and Bangkok for 90,000 miles on US Airways. Still need a guide book to Vietnam!

    1. Grant

Hopefully it’s not too hot when you go. Check Amazon for used guide books from 1-2 years ago. Then you can sell it back on Amazon after your trip #freebook

  22. Mike W

Hey Grant, Mike from SD here. You and I are actually swapping weekends. I’m taking the family to Cabo on Sunday on the new SW flight from OC. He turns 2 in a couple of weeks, so we’re getting one last free trip for him in before we have to buy him a ticket. We’ve probably taken 8 or 9 trips with our companion status since he was born. Best travel perk around.

We went to Portland for a quick weekend getaway the weekend you were in Cabo. Brought the toddler, and drank plenty of beers in the process. Ended up booking with travel pony, but appreciated the heads up on Orbitz Rewards. Highly recommend Hair of the Dog and Cascade Barrel House for some very high octain unique barrel aged beers, and Rouge was surprisingly fantastic. Cascade is nearly all sours, and they do them very well. Email me if should want some more details on what worked out for our trip. See you in SD hopefully soon.
    -Mike

    1. Grant

Thanks Mike, you will like Cabo. Very tourist friendly. Make sure to bring plenty of cash. Every place charges 16% tax on credit card payments. I want to try Hair of the Dog and a sour beer while I’m here. Have a great time and thanks for the tips!

      1. Mike W

Also, I forgot to mention the Portland Saturday market. It’s open on Sundays too. They have pretty much every type of food you could want and tons of vendors and people hanging out and enjoying themselves. It was so nice, we went back a second time. My wife and I loved the food from the African food truck and the Polish truck with pirogues and kielbasas was fantastic. Plus you can enjoy a beer from Rogue in the process. Enjoy!

        1. Grant

We are heading over to the Saturday market right now. Short walk from out hotel before we go on a free walking tour of Portland.

    1. Grant

I like that plan. I’m hanging out at the Yardhouse. Then heading back to the Hilton soon. Going on the Portlandia free walking tour tomorrow.

  23. Alex

Going to sd today possibly! We always hit up tacos el gordo in chula vista…. Best tacos in the world. Then la tomorrow to visit old college friends. Gonna eat in ktown at a place I saw on TV called beer belly, then maybe ramen at night. Foodie weekend!!! Hope u have an awesome time grant. Btw do u get referral cashback for Everything purchased on amazon?? I wish id known earlier… I’ll buy everything I get there thru u!

    1. Grant

Sounds like a fun-filled-food-feeding-frenzy weekend. I hope to have a similarly delicious weekend. Yes, I do earn a commission on everything from Amazon, even Amazon gift cards, as long as you click the Amazon button first. Thank you for your support :)

  24. sil

Relax and catch up on house chores and recuperating from working the last 2 days. Just back after 4 weeks of vacationing in Indonesia and Malaysia

  25. wildglasstx

We are going to eat at Zax Austin, where there is an awesome brunch menu. Then I need to finish up my Sync deals. Do you have any Serve subaccounts set up, I’m testing to see if the subaccounts will get the $10 too. They have gotten sync deals in the past but it has been awhile since I’ve tested them.

    1. Grant

I do not have sub accounts on my Serve Cards, would be interesting if you can get the sync deals working on the sub accounts.

  26. GAM

I’m heading to Cape Cod for my aunt and uncle’s 50th anniversary. The party is at a swanky yacht club and the drinks will be free!

  27. Brian

I’ll be in Tucson with my wife and a couple friends playing a lot of golf!

Side note, we’ll be in Portland the first weekend in October and would really love to hear your opinion on where to stay on points to be best positioned to hit up a lot of micro brews. Thanks!

    1. Grant

Sounds like a fun weekend playing golf. On the free walking tour I went on, the guide said there are 70 micro brews inside Portland city limits and more than 300 right outside the city. I’m bit sure exactly where most of them are located, but I would probably not stay in downtown where the financial buildings are. I’ll do some research and let you know.

  28. Allisha Gold

My plans were just catching up on some reading, hanging with friends, and enjoying 3 days of no classes or work :)

  29. Dale Rausch

Currently here in Atlanta for Dragoncon! I’m using my SPG Amex for 5 nights at the Sheraton Atlanta (5th night free). I also used by British Airways Chase Visa to get cheap short haul flights from MIA to ATL.

    1. Grant

Good morning Dale, is Dragoncon similar to Comicon? Sounds like a great use of BA Avios and SPG points. Is the Sheraton ATL in the city or close to the airport?

  30. Tim. W

Miami Beach for the holiday! Flying Delta free on Skymiles, hotel on beach for free with Barclay Arrival points, Thrifty car rental free with UR points. You’ve taught us well Grant! Enjoy your weekend!
