New SPG Buy Points Promo: SPG Points for 2.63 CPP or Frequent Flyer Miles for 2.10 CPM

SPG has a new buy points promotion going on from now through May 31.  Is it a good deal?  Maybe, maybe not.  Let’s see…

They have a tiered promotion where you receive the points at a discount, rather than receiving bonus points on a purchase.  The more SPG points you purchase, the larger the discount, ranging from 10% all the way to 25%.  Click here to go to the promo page.

In most buy/gift/share points promos, the best deals are usually when you buy the most points.  This promo is no exception.  You can buy a maximum of 20,000 SPG points, receive a 25% discount, and it will cost you $525, including all taxes/fees.

20,000 SPG Points

Here is a chart showing the cost per point (CPP) for various levels of SPG points.  The great thing about SPG points is that you can convert SPG points to frequent flyer miles in several different programs.  The best part is, if you convert 20,000 SPG points, you will get a 25% bonus, so you will receive 25,000 frequent flyer miles (assuming a standard 1:1 ratio).  See the chart below for all the calculations:

Buy SPG Discount (%) Paid Price CPP for SPG CPM
2000 10% $63.00 $3.15 $3.15
4000 10% $126.00 $3.15 $3.15
6000 10% $189.00 $3.15 $3.15
8000 10% $252.00 $3.15 $3.15
10000 15% $297.50 $2.98 $2.98
12000 15% $357.00 $2.98 $2.98
14000 15% $416.50 $2.98 $2.98
16000 20% $448.00 $2.80 $2.80
18000 20% $504.00 $2.80 $2.80
20000 25% $525.00 $2.63 $2.10

Here is the current list of all the frequent flyer programs SPG works with.  Some of my favorite choices would be American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and British Airways.  You can usually get US Airways miles for less than 2.10 cents per mile and United Airlines has a crummy 2 SPG points to 1 United mile exchange rate, so I would avoid those 2 frequent flyer programs.
